Baby poodles are very cute when they are small. This may be dangerous when you have to buy one of them, because there are some dishonest breeders that take advantage of their cuteness. It is extremely wrong to buy a poodle only because he is cute. You must be sure that the poodle you are going to buy does not have health problems. A premature death could be very tough to deal for you and your family.
Where to buy him
Generally, you should buy them only from licensed breeders. Buying a poodle from a private could be cheaper, but dangerous.
You must avoid to buy poodles that are stored inside garages or places not suitable for them. In case you buy them on the Internet, you must be very careful to avoid frauds.
Choosing the breeder
If you decided to buy the poodle from a breeder, take some time to choose the right farm. Choosing the best breeder, it’s important in order to avoid many problems that, in the future, you may have in case you buy a poodle from a dishonest breeder.
There are some advices that could help you choose the best farm in which to buy your poodle:
- Is preferable to choose a breeder registered in a national agency;
- It is not a good sign if the breeder deal with many breeds. Expert breeders prefer to have only one breed in their farms;
- Breeder should check the dog’s health regularly;
- During the visit at the farm, check if the environment and the puppies are clean;
- Breeder must give you the possibility to see poodle’s parents. In some cases, you will be able to see only the mother due to the fact that the breeder bought the semen which they use to get her pregnant;
- Breeder should shows you official papers that certify that poodle’s parents have been tested for the most common health problems;
- You may be inserted in a waiting list by the breeder;
- A lower price it is not generally a good sign;
- It is illegal to sell a poodle that is younger than seven weeks;
- A serious breeder will ask you if you have kids in your family, in order to be sure that the poodle will find a comfy house.
Breeder will give you the poodle when he is, at least, 9 weeks old, with a certificate that attests that the poodle received all the mandatory vaccines and that a microchip was planted in him.
The microchip is a small glass capsule, smaller than a grain of rice (see next fig.), in which there is a transponder that communicates the data regarding the dog. It is planted by a vet with a small syringe.
The birth certificate will be available after two or three weeks. Usually, breeders use to give a small bag of food that the dog is used to eat, in order to progressively induce him to change his food supply once at home.
