The poodle is recommended for families with children for several reasons. They have almost no fur shedding, making allergy problems extremely rare. Additionally, poodles have a natural inclination to play and interact with children and are unlikely to display guarded or aggressive behaviours towards them.
However, it is important to ensure that the child does not accidentally hurt the poodle, especially if it is a puppy or a toy-sized poodle. It is necessary to explain to him that the poodle is not a stuffed toy, and actions such as patting his head, squeezing his neck, or pulling his tail cause him pain and may elicit a violent reaction. Generally, children should be taught not to approach any dog while he is sleeping or eating, and they should never try to take away the dog’s food as part of a game. In any case, if the dog, or the child, is particularly small, they should never be left alone together.
Once their bond is established, child and dog can form a lifelong connection, especially because they make perfect playmates for each other. They both have boundless enthusiasm and a desire to expend their energy, making them great companions in play.
