An important premise: as I have repeatedly mentioned, every dog is an individual, so they may have little or no preference or even be intolerant to certain foods that are enjoyed by other dogs of the same breed; for example, in some poodles, beans and green beans have a laxative effect. For this reason, the lists provided below should be understood as general guidelines to be supplemented with personal experience and, if necessary, the advice of an expert.
FRUITS
- Bananas.
- Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries.
- Apples, which are an excellent source of fibres, vitamin C, and vitamin A and are generally enjoyed by dogs. However, it is important to give the dog apples without the core and seeds, as both contain small amounts of cyanide: for them to be truly toxic, the dog would have to consume enormous quantities at once or have them regularly included in their daily diet, but it is still better to eliminate any risk.
- Melons and watermelons.
- Carrots.
- Beans and green beans.
- Sweet potatoes.
- Peas.
- Pumpkins.
MEATS
- Dried or raw meat, after being frozen and then thawed to eliminate any bacteria.
- Cooked chicken slices.
OTHER FOODS
- Peanut butter.
- Oatmeal.
- Sliced or cubed cheese.
- Cooked salmon or other fish.
- Yogurt, preferably without added sugars or fats.
Foods to avoid
Several foods that we commonly eat can be indigestible or toxic for our poodles, although they may be attracted to them. It is important to keep these items away from poodles, and always consult a vet for guidance on a suitable diet and potential hazards for your dog.
Here is a list of some of those foods:
FRUIT
- Citrus fruits: allowed only in moderate quantities and if the poodle particularly enjoys them; they should be thoroughly seedless.
- Avocado: all parts of this fruit, including leaves, seeds, and peel, contain persin, a toxin harmful to poodles.
- Persimmons: can cause intestinal blockages.
- Fruit pits and seeds: many of them, such as apple, cherry, and peach pits, contain cyanogenic glycosides that can cause cyanide poisoning in dogs.
- Coconut.
- Walnuts and peanuts.
- Grapes, both fresh and dried: a toxin in grapes can damage the kidneys of poodles, leading to acute kidney failure.
VEGETABLES
- Garlic and, especially, onions: they contain thiosulfate, which is toxic to dogs if consumed in a large single dose or repeatedly.
- Broccoli.
- Potato leaves, stems, or peels, as well as green parts of potatoes: due to their oxalate content, they can affect the nervous, digestive, and urinary systems of poodles.
- Tomato leaves or stems, as well as green parts of tomatoes: similar to potatoes, they contain oxalates.
BEVERAGES
- Alcoholic beverages.
- Coffee.
OTHER
- Chocolate, especially dark chocolate: the theobromine it contains has an excessively stimulating effect on the dog’s heart and bladder.
- Artificial sweeteners, especially xylitol.
- Mushrooms.
- Milk and fresh dairy products.
- Hops.
- Cooked or small-sized bones – such as chicken or pork bones – as they can splinter and damage the dog’s teeth or cause choking.
- Rising dough: it can produce gas in the stomach and cause bloating, which can have serious consequences.
- Salty snacks: excessive salt can cause an electrolyte imbalance in the dog’s blood.
- Raw eggs: they can transmit salmonella.
