Approximately 28-30 days after mating, a vet can confirm the pregnancy through ultrasound, X-ray, or abdominal palpation. In some cases, pregnancy detection may be possible as early as 21 days after mating.
The poodle’s pregnancy lasts from 59 to 63 days, which is about nine weeks. During this time:
- You should continue to provide daily exercise for your poodle, but with caution to avoid excessive exertion;
- In the last five weeks of gestation, gradually increase the amount of food offered, starting with a 20% increase and gradually reaching a 50% increase;
- As the expected due date approaches, prepare a large enough box to accommodate the poodle and the puppies, with raised edges to prevent the puppies from rolling out. While there are special whelping boxes available for dogs, a large box that is cut open at the top and partially on one side to allow entry and exit will work just fine. Place newspapers or blankets at the bottom. The box should be placed in a quiet area, not too bright, away from drafts, and should be prepared a few days before the expected delivery so that the poodle can get used to it and go there when she feels the delivery is imminent.
Leading up to the moment of delivery, prepare everything that may be necessary:
- A couple of sturdy absorbent paper rolls;
- Surgical thread or unwaxed dental floss;
- Iodine,
- Blunt-tip scissors,
- Cotton and disinfectant,
- If winter, a small heater,
- Always have the vet’s contact number readily available in case there are any problems.
