Despite every dog – like humans – should be considered an individual, unique and different from others, in general, poodles go into heat starting from 4-7 months of age, twice a year, in spring and autumn, with an interval of approximately six months between the two heat cycles. Some smaller-sized dogs may experience three cycles in a year.

The heat cycles in dogs are generally composed by four phases:

  • Proestrus: The initial phase, which can last from 4 to 15 days. During this phase, the vulva swells, and there are typically bloody vaginal discharges, reaching its peak around the eighth day. The urine of the poodle contains pheromones that attract male dogs in the vicinity;
  • Estrus: The period when the poodle is fertile, lasting 5-8 days;
  • Diestrus: A phase that can last from two to three months. If the poodle is not pregnant, there may rarely be instances of “false pregnancy,” where the dog’s body mimics the symptoms of pregnancy despite not being pregnant;
  • Anestrus: The final phase, which typically lasts three to four months. During this phase, the poodle’s body returns to a long period of hormonal normality, where there is no need for any sexual activity.
