It is one of the innate behaviours of dogs, which despite having differentiated over the years into hundreds of breeds, still share over 99% of their DNA with the wolf, from which all current dog breeds derive.
In nature, for a wolf and a dog, digging has the purpose of looking for something edible such as roots, moles or other underground animals – and some dog breeds such as dachshunds and beagles were created precisely with this instinct so that they were able to chase the animals in their dens – or the aim of making a small hole where to rest and sleep sheltering themselves a bit from the heat or cold, or even to hide bones or any other food to be used as a food supply.
This innate habit is also present in our poodles, which is why they try to dig on the floor, then turning around halfway and finally crouch down in the imaginary hole they have dug. Rather, in the event you want to create a small outdoor enclosure for them, remember to bury the fence for about ten centimetres, in order to prevent a fashionable escape for those who escape from prison by digging underground tunnels.
